Run or watch at the CG Festival


The Tri-Cities area is known for its active lifestyle. Locals and visitors alike will have several opportunities to participate in and watch sports during the Coast Guard Festival.

Coast Guard Festival Run

The Coast Guard Festival Runs kick things off on Saturday, July 30, providing a number of options for endurance athletes of all abilities.

The day will begin early with the 5K run/walk at 7:30 a.m. The 10K run will follow at 8:30 a.m., with the 1-mile family fun run/walk (8:45 a.m.) and tot trot obstacle course (9:15 a.m.) to follow. An award ceremony will take place at 10 a.m.

All events will begin and end at the Tri-Cities Family YMCA, 1 Y Drive, Grand Haven. The price for an individual 5K or 10K participant is $30, while a family of up to four people can participate in either event for $65.

The 1-mile fun run is $13 with a T-shirt included, $5 without. The tot trot is free, with eligible participants ranging from 3-6 years old.

Packet pick up and late registration will take place on Friday, July 29, from 4:30-7 p.m., and on race day from 6:30-9 a.m.

Whitehall native Greg Madendorp won last year’s 10K, finishing more than 2 minutes faster than the nearest competitor with a time of 33 minutes, 50 seconds.

Claire Borchers, a 2014 Grand Haven High School graduate who now competes for the University of Michigan, was the top women’s runner, finishing in a time of 38:04.

Northville’s Chad Cini was the overall 5K winner, with a time of 15:24, while Grand Rapids’ Paige Boldt was the top women’s finisher (18:36).

Coast Guard Golf Tournament

CG_GOLFThe Grand Haven Golf Club will open its course up to Coast Guard members on Tuesday, Aug. 2, with the players teeing off at 8 a.m.

There will be a new champion this year. Last year’s winning foursome of South Carolina resident Jerry McIntyre and Ohio natives Chris Markinson and Kevin and Alex Hiller decided to end their annual trip to the festival in order to spend more time with their families.

Coast Guard Softball Tournament

The Coast Guard softball tournament will be a two-day affair, taking place Aug. 4-5.

CG_SOFTBALLLocals and visitors are encouraged to watch the games. A number of teams should have familiar faces, including The Batters, who are seemingly in championship contention every year.
